Any serious study of Butterflies and Moths must inevitably involve a study also of their food plants as they are all host-specific. Habitat will also be a consideration.

A website 'links' page is accessible via the contact tab above. This will deliver both the Butterfly Conservation website and the UK Butterflies website. For more complete information on the whole subject, people are advised to visit those websites. The information below is infomation I have extracted from those websites, tailored for my own specific use in my own specific areas of interest. You may have different interests. The dates shown contain the latest update I have posted.

Subject Date Description

Introduction 13.03.2026 Intended only for anyone considering recording Butterflies and/or Moths.

Brown Butterflies 22.03.2026 A collection of images and other information carried on my phone to act as an aide memoire or reference (PDF) when I am actively hunting for species. I do not want to be carrying books.

White and Yellow 05.05.2026 Supplied by Ken Orpe and originating from Butterfly Conservation, some may find this (PDF) document interesting. Some but not all can be identified on the wing if you are close enough.

Butterfly Bio 06.03.2026

A collection of pages relating to a small number of Butterflies I want to focus on. This PDF contains a description of footplants of both caterpillars and adults. In addition there is a useful chart relating to the timeline of appearance at each stage in development.

The PDF currently contains the following species only: Green Hairstreak, Small Heath, Large Heath, Meadow Brown, Essex Skipper, Wall Brown, Ringlet, Gatekeeper and Speckled Wood.

Sightings submitted 02.05.2026 This is the most recent sightings spreadsheet I have submitted to the County Recorder. Remember I only submit casual reports, I am not focused whole time on Butterflies and I do not walk transects.

Skippers N/A This will be a chart illustrating and detailing the diagnostic characteristics of the Large Skipper, Small Skipper and Essex Skipper but it will be months in the making as I want different images to those I already have and will shoot those in season.

Butterfly Food Plants 07.03.2026 Butterfly food plants both as caterpillars and adults. This information sourced from UK Butterflies as tables and I converted those tables into a useful excel spreadsheet which can be downloaded and interrogated via the data filters set up.

Ditto as a PDF 14.03.2026 An adapted copy of the Butterfly Food Plants spreadsheet has been produced with both Adult and Caterpillar information in the same PDF file. Handy to keep on the phone.

Note: My move into this topic is in part to maintain interest, given that I already have many species under other headings. My interest in other headings will remain but concentrating more on Butterflies will add more scope given their abundance is guaranteed in the Goyt and insect photography can be technically interesting.
