Dismantled railway - MAIN > MAIN 2 > MAIN 3 > MAIN 4 >

This landscape section mirrors Route 19 in the routes section. In this exceptional case (for the benefit of prospective motorised scooter users) photographs are offered sequentially in the order of travel. A total of 32 images initially, comprising a there and back illustration (3.8km total). The end point is well marked and any images introduced after that end point will be random images as adopted on other landscape pages. This route is especially suitable for motorised scooters and the superbly made track seen stretches end to end without any interruption. No need to enquire further if you prefer not to see images (and discover for yourself).

Some images may include a green arrow to indicate the direction of shooting, when the direction of shooting is not straight ahead or otherwise obvious. If required images with arrows can be provided without arrows on request. A number of these images - and associated comment - might not ordinarily make it into the landscapes pages but they are provided to inform motorised scooter users. The original pages had photographs shot late in October and were dismal. Now we have a few days of pretty weather the opportunity has been taken to update.

The small car park on the right as you travel down Goyt's Lane from the A5004. Opposite the main car park marked on the OS map. There are three designated spaces for blue badge users and is the optimium car parking spot for access to the old railway (Route 19): August 13th. 2025

The path leading to the road and the entrance to the old railway: August 13th. 2025

The start of the old railway track with the old railway steam pond on your left: August 13th. 2025

Tucked away neatly down in the small clough is a hot spot for Lepidoptera species, for those moving on foot. Challenging access and gets very boggy but being free from foot traffic and dogs, makes it a prized habitat for Butterflies and day time Moths plus other species, including Lizards in the walls (walls hidden from road view in the shot above): August 13th. 2025

As the arrow suggests, looking back towards the car park and the old steam pond: August 13th. 2025

The first easily navigated barrier, designed to exclude unauthorised vehicles: August 13th. 2025

August 13th. 2025

Looking down towards Wildmoorstone Brook and the iron bridge: August 13th. 2025

This is a vernal pool which is usually flooded all year round and has been home to a colony of Palmate Newts for a long time. This stretches back into a sort of tunnel hidden by the grass, so how far water extends I do not know. The unseen rear of this place is still ponding though not obvious as it is hidden by shadow: August 13th. 2025

There is something very special about this place and route that I cannot put into words. You never know what might turn up unexpectedly. I have snapped all sorts down here including the Ring Ouzel, Curlew, inevitably Meadow Pipits and far more, both with and without a backbone. People often complain to me about the apparent lack of birds in the Goyt Valley but there are invariably a lot of LBT's (little brown things) on this route flitting about on walls, as bushes are few. Definitely long lens route: August 13th. 2025
