Navigation: wildlife > odonata > dragonflies > Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum)

Declaration: For the record I do not claim to have seen or heard of this species in the Goyt Valley. It is however well within range and very close by. I positively identified it in the general area but it is hard to identify. Close contact (with a lens) essential. Superficially almost identical to the Common Darter but far less common. The ruddy red colour much stronger and consistent. Viewed from above (essential) the abdomen is clearly bulbous and swollen compared to the Common Darter.

August 3rd.

Note the heavily bulbous abdomen, not shared by the Common Darter. Also more solidly red. (I have a far superior images of the back somewhere when I come across them): July 16th.
