Navigation: wildlife > amphibians > palmate newt (Lissotriton helveticus)

Newts tend to stay in water for the best part of the season and will be seen frequently (every fifteen minutes or so) rising to take a breath, which is when they are the most vulnerable. When they leave the water any old damp place will do, free from the risk of predation.

Characterised by the unspotted throat, this female was netted (and returned) to Pond Number Two, at SK 003 741 - Elev: 422 metres, which is acidic like all moorland ponds and preferred. Also a very peaceful place: July 20th.

Male: May 15th.
